Research

The basis premise

Research is the basic premise of all museum activity, from acquisition, conservation and restoration, to publication, education and presentation. In general, this research involves the object or work of art in the museum as being a source of information. In this sense historical and art-historical research in a museum context differs from university research, which has a more theoretical focus.

At the Rijksmuseum, research into objects and works of art, and in particular acquisitions, often leads to an article in The Rijksmuseum Bulletin , the museum's academic periodical. Catalogues of the collection open the museum up to researchers, providing access to the various departments, alongside exhibition catalogues and other publications.
