The Rijksmuseum rounds off Rembrandt's 400th anniversary year with a temporary presentation of a major work by the artist: his Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet (1657). Since this painting has been part of a private collection in the United Kingdom for over a hundred years and is rarely lent out, it has remained relatively unknown. Catrina has only appeared in the Netherlands twice, once for Rembrandt's 300th and once for his 350th anniversary. The Rijksmuseum is therefore especially proud to be able to show the work to the public from 29 November to 29 April 2007 to mark Rembrandt's 400th anniversary.
The Rijksmuseum is presenting all 60 of Rembrandt's drawings, which the museum counts among its riches, in two instalments. In part one Rembrandt can be seen as a self-willed storyteller of bible stories in particular. In the second part of this duo exhibition, we see how Rembrandt views the world around him and how he records it.
On 22 September 2006, the exhibition Rembrandt and the Golden Age: Masterpieces from the Rijksmuseum will open in the Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, Ohio in the United States. The exhibition was put together by the Rijksmuseum and consists of over 100 paintings and other works of art, including several works by Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Ruisdael and Frans Hals. This is the first time that an exhibition of this size containing artworks from the Rijksmuseum collection has been shown in the United States. The exhibition Rembrandt and the Golden Age: Masterpieces from the Rijksmuseum will tour the Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, Ohio (30 September 2006 - 7 January 2007), the Phoenix Art Museum in Phoenix, Arizona (27 January - 6 May 2007) and the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon (26 May - 16 September 2007).
For the first time, the Rijksmuseum will be presenting paintings that were originally attributed to Rembrandt and were bought as such by the Rijksmuseum, but about which doubts have arisen over the years. During the presentation, visitors will be shown what elements of a painting lead us to believe that it is, or is not a Rembrandt, using methods such as infrared- and X-ray images. The presentation will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the Rijksmuseum Rembrandt study, whereby new insights will also be revealed. In all, 13 works will be displayed at the presentation. Really Rembrandt? will give visitors the opportunity to learn about of the opinions of various experts, but most of all to have a look for themselves and to form their own opinions.
Part of the Really Rembrandt? exhibition in the Philips Wing of the Rijksmuseum will travel to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol (1 June - 5 November 2006).
Nightwatching in the Rijksmuseum is a theatrical installation that uses images and sound around the theme of Rembrandt's Night Watch. This creation from the renowned director Peter Greenaway sheds an entirely new light on Rembrandt's greatest masterpiece, in which the visitors are transformed into a theatre audience and the characters from the painting come to life.
One of the highlights of the Rembrandt year! The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum will jointly be presenting a unique encounter between the two geniuses of Baroque painting: Rembrandt van Rijn and Il Caravaggio. Over 25 monumental paintings on loan from various international museums will offer a visual spectacle with powerful images of love, emotion and passion. The Rembrandt-Caravaggio exhibition can only be seen in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
The Rijksmuseum holds one of the largest collections of Rembrandt's paintings in the world. The Jewish Bride, The Syndics of the Amsterdam Drapers' Guild, the Self-portrait of Rembrandt as a Young Man and, of course, The Night Watch, are among his most famous works. But have you also seen his wonderful self-portrait as the apostle Paul, the portrait of his son Titus dressed as a monk or the impressive still life with peacocks? It is a rare occurrence for the entire collection of Rembrandt paintings to be exhibited all together. And now they can be seen for almost a month in the Philips Wing at the Rijksmuseum!

In honour of the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth, the Rijksmuseum will for the first time present an exhibition of works by Rembrandt's pupils at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Even in the early days of his career, Rembrandt presided over a bustling studio filled with pupils and assistants working in the style of the great master. These included such famous painters as Gerard Dou, Carel Fabritius and Govert Flinck. Not only does the Rijksmuseum have the most important collection of Rembrandts in the world, it also maintains the largest collection of works by his pupils. Rembrandt's Pupils shows an overview of 11 works by his pupils and followers.
