The 17th-century artist Hendrick Avercamp was dumb and was probably also deaf. During the winter exhibition celebrating his work, Hendrick Avercamp: The Little Ice Age (20 November 2009 - 15 February 2010 in the Rijksmuseum), the Rijksmuseum launched a special programme for the deaf and hearing impaired.
Visiting groups can request a tour in International Sign Language with the theme Rembrandt & the Golden Age. This tour always includes Hendrick Avercamp's Winter Landscape with Skaters. The 1,5 hour tour costs €100 per group. Schools pay €75. Please request the tour at least two weeks in advance using the form at the bottom of this page.
Dutch teaching material about Avercamp is available for pupils with impaired hearing. This includes a short film with English subtitles:

In Handtheater's Frozen Motion performance, deaf actor John van Gelder brings Avercamp's Winter Landscape with Skaters in the Rijksmuseum to life. Watch twelve scenes from the show at www.avercamp.com!
