The Battle of Nieuwpoort in 1600 demonstrated the military supremacy that the Dutch Republic had gained in the war with Spain. For the first time ever in a field battle - either in the Netherlands or outside - the enemy had been beaten, which made this battle especially significant. In a central position in the foreground is Prince Maurice, the Republic's commander-in-chief. He is wearing armour with an orange sash around his shoulders and middle. In front of the horse, slightly to the right, stands a figure holding Maurice's helmet. In the middle distance the battle is being fought. Above rises a golden sky. |
