Rembrandt was twenty-two years old when he painted this portrait. It is a striking experiment in light and shade. His face is almost invisible. He has represented himself entirely in raking lightRaking lightLight glancing diagonally onto an object or person is referred to as raking light. It results in a cast shadow providing a dramatic contrast of dark and light.. This small panel is one of Rembrandt's earliest self portraits.
