This triptych was intended for private use. By contemplating on the painting, the devotee would be able to empathise with the suffering of Christ. It was only when the polyptych was opened for prayer that the central picture became visible: the crucifixion. The object is so compact that it could easily be taken on a journey. It was essential that it was well-packed; the painting on the outside is very delicate. In fact, the work has remained almost completely undamaged. Jan Wellens de Cock painted this portable altar in around 1506.
