In 1667, the English man-of-war 'Royal Charles' was captured by Dutch warships and taken back to the Netherlands as a prize. Some years later the ship was scrapped, but the counter decoration was preserved. The counter is the part of the ship which rises up above the stern, and was often decorated with elaborate carvings. |
