All kinds of symbols are incorporated on this large gold pendant referring to love and marriage: in the middle, above the large central stone, hands hold up a flaming heart. On either side, two parrots are seated on horns of plentyHorn of PlentyThe horn of plenty - cornucopia - is a large horn pouring out the produce of the earth: grain, fruit and flowers. Often it is carried by gods and goddesses bringing fertility to the country., while turtle doves are depicted below. Above, the eagle with the lightning shafts may represent the potency of the man. The jewel was clearly a wedding present. Who it was made for remains a mystery, although it is known that it was made around 1600, probably somewhere in Germany. |
