Sitting astride this double-headed dragon - one head in front and one on the tail - is a man. He is gripping the candlepin which appears to be growing out of the dragon's back. This bronze candleholder was made in the first half of the thirteenth century in Hildesheim, Germany. People, animals and legendary creatures were popular subjects for candlesticks in this period. |
