Adriaen van Utrecht (1599-1652)Although his name suggests otherwise, Adriaen van Utrecht actually lived in Antwerp. In 1614 he joined the studio of Herman de Ryt as apprentice. Later, he travelled extensively through France, Italy and Germany. After his return in 1625 Van Utrecht painted expansive still lifes and specialised in poultry yards. These were a favourite with his contemporaries, a fact confirmed by the large number of his paintings that found their way to Spain in the seventeenth century. These works can now be seen in the Prado in Madrid. Adriaen van Utrecht often worked together with other painters in Antwerp. Artists such as David Teniers and Jacob Jordaens would paint the figures on his canvases. |
