Severo da Ravenna

Severo da Ravenna

(active c. 1496-c. 1543) The Italian sculptor Severo da Ravenna was probably trained by his father, Domenico Calzetta. As a qualified artist he worked alternately in Padua, Ferrara and Ravenna. It is known that in 1511 he produced statues for the visit of Pope Julius II to Ravenna. A number of other works have been ascribed to him, but only one statue, a marble St Anthony in Padua, is definitely his work. In the famous theoretical work of 1504, 'De sculptura' ('On sculpture') Severo is featured in the chapter on bronze statues. Clearly, he had a major reputation in that field.
