Barend Cornelis Koekkoek

B.C. Koekkoek (1803-1862)

Barend Cornelis Koekkoek was born in Middelburg, in a family of painters. He studied painting with his father and later attended the Amsterdam Academy. With a group of fellow painters he travelled round Germany and Belgium, where he found inspiration for his mountain and woodland landscapes. In 1841, in the German town of Cleves, he founded his own art academy, which was also attended by Dutch painters such as Paul Gabriel. Koekkoek was a highly successful painter, who became quite famous during his lifetime. His detailed landscapes are characteristic examples of Dutch Romantic art.
