Dirck van Delen (1605-1671)

Artist Dirck van Delen was born in Heusden, near Den Bosch. In 1625 he married in Middelburg and settled in nearby Arnemuiden. From 1628 until his death in 1671 he was a member of the town council, often also serving as burgomaster. Van Delen had an unhappy private life: three successive marriages ended with the death of his spouse. In his paintings, Van Delen focused entirely on architectural themes: originally depicting Renaissance palaces, later adding gothic church interiors. He copied the figures in these architectural works from paintings by the artist Dirck Hals of Haarlem. Van Delen's paintings were a major inspiration to the younger generation of architectural artists from Antwerp.
