Dirck Jacobsz (1496-1567)Dirck Jacobsz was the son of Northern Netherlandish painter Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen. Where he was born not known. However, he appears to have spent his formative years in Amsterdam. Dirck learned his trade from his father. During his apprenticeship he met Jan van Scorel, who was to remain a friend the rest of his life. Dirck was one of the first painters in the Netherlands to devote his time exclusively to painting portraits. In 1529 Dirck produced a group portrait, an early example of the typically Dutch civic guard portrait. Dirck added symbolic elements to his portraits such as hourglasses and skulls, references to the transience of life. |
