Anthonis Mor van Dashorst

Anthonis Mor (1519-1576)

The Utrecht painter Anthonis Mor van Dashorst was a pupil of Jan van Scorel. In 1547 Mor established himself as an independent painter in Antwerp. His patron, Cardinal Granvelle, brought him into contact with the Spanish Hapsburg court in Brussels. Anthonis Mor worked in Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands. He painted the rulers of Europe in an international courtly style, characterised by a tempered and harmonious use of colour together with a strong depiction of the face and hands of the subject. This can clearly be seen in the portrait of Thomas Gresham, representative of the English crown in the Netherlands.
