The painter Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem came from a prosperous family. When his parents fled Haarlem in 1572, as the Spanish army laid siege to the city, Cornelis remained behind and was raised by the painter Pieter Pietersz, his first teacher. Around 1584 Cornelis met Hendrick Goltzius and Karel van Mander with whom he set up the Haarlem Academy. Together with these painters, Cornelis van Haarlem represented the Dutch brand of Mannerism; they painted figures - often nude - in unusual positions and twisted poses.
