Cornelis Anthonisz

Cornelis Anthonisz (c. 1505-1553)

Cornelis Anthonisz, engraver and painter, belonged to a prominent Amsterdam artistic family: his grandfather and possibly also his teacher was Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen. The portrait painter Dirck Jacobsz was his uncle. From Cornelis's hand there exist primarily a large number of prints - woodcuts - and only two paintings. His best-known woodcut is a map of the city of Amsterdam from 1544, printed from 12 wooden blocks. Aside from maps, Anthonisz made portraits of royalty and woodcuts with a moralistic - sometimes also humorous - message. He probably reached a wide public with such prints.
