Francisco de Goya (1746-1828)Having completed his apprenticeship in Zaragoza under the painter José Luz n, Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes left for Madrid in around 1763. There he continued to study painting. Back in Madrid in 1775 he married Josefa Bayeu, sister of one of his teachers. She was to bear no less than 24 children. Once Goya had found his way as a portraitist into aristocratic circles his star quickly rose. In 1789 the Spanish king Charles IV appointed him painter to the Spanish court. For years he was to enjoy close contact with the Spanish royals. During the Napoleonic War he depicted the horrors of the conflict in intensive portrayals. His paintings of this period are moving contemporary documents. In 1824 Goya settled in Bordeaux. Two years later the artist died. |
