Tilman Riemenschneider

(c. 1460-1531) German sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider was born around 1460. He probably trained in Erfurt. In 1585 Riemenschneider was listed as resident in Würzburg. He received commissions from all around the region for altarpiecesAltarpiece or reredosAn altarpiece is a carving or painting made for a church altar, the table at which mass is said. Normally, the altarpiece rests on the altar, but it is also found behind or even above. The centre of the altarpiece features a depiction of Christ, the Virgin Mary or a saint, with the side panels generally showing scenes relating to the life of the central figure. These are presented in chronological order and can be read like a comic strip. The backs of the side panels are almost always painted, giving a finished aspect to the altarpiece when closed. Sometimes panels are attached along the bottom; this is referred to by the Italian term 'predella'.. Tombs were also a specialty. Riemenschneider worked in the Gothic style; his oeuvre reveals almost no Renaissance influences. Towards the end of his life, the prosperous and successful Riemenschneider suffered a dramatic reversal of fortune. His sympathies for the rebellious peasants in the region in 1524 cost him dearly: part of his property was confiscated, and he was tortured. On 7 July 1531 Riemenschneider died in Würzberg.
