Sebastiano Torrigiani(worked between 1573 and 1596) The Bologna-born artist Sebastiano Torrigiani was a skilful caster of bronzes. In the late sixteenth century he was one of the leading artists of bronze sculptures in Rome; his large bronze of St Peter, surmounting the Trajan column in Rome is renowned. Torrigiani was also responsible for the metal screen in the Sistine chapel and he made several life-size portraits of popes. His bust of Pope Gregory, made around 1590, is a miniature replica of one of these large portraits. |
